In late March the Fifty Shades of Grey movie rights were acquired by Universal Pictures and Focus Features, giving them the exclusive rights to turn the book into a movie.
I find this interesting because, if you haven’t heard of the book, Fifty Shades of Grey is a BDSM erotica novel written by E.L. James. It’s quite popular and has taken the book community by storm. It has even topped the Amazon best sellers list. I personally haven’t read it although I have been tempted because of the sheer popularity of an erotic novel, which I really haven’t seen happen and is quite rare.
Fifty Shades of Grey is the first book in a trilogy about a college student named Anastasia who starts a relationship with a man name Christian Grey, who is a successful and rich entrepreneur. The book takes us on a journey through their relationship as they grow to know each other both physically and as individuals.
But as far turning the book into a movie, how will this be done main stream? Even if it was rated R, I would think that the sexual tone of the story would have to be greatly reduced in order for it not to feel like a porn.
Having said all that, it is still a romance and so I will be curious to see how the Shades of Grey movie will balance the romance, story, and sexual subjects in order to release a movie based on the book to the masses. If done right then I will certainly be interested in seeing the whole trilogy of books as movies.
What are your thoughts on a Fifty Shades of Grey movie? Have you read the book? Do you think a movie based on the book will flourish as a movie or flop?
